Commodore 16 - 1981

The Commodore 64, at around £230, was a little expensive. To compete at the cheaper end, Commodore released the C16. It was designed to replace the VIC-20 but managed to be compatible with neither the VIC nor the Commodore 64. It was actually compatible with the Commodore Plus/4 and had a different sound and graphics chip from the 64 and with less memory (16KB). There were no hardware sprites but it came with a better BASIC language. It cost £130 compared to £250 for the Plus/4 though the latter had 64KB of memory and when both bombed in the marketplace, the Plus/4 was available for not much more than the C16.
